Live Sewer Smart and avoid costly and messy headaches
Ever think about your sewer system? No surprise, most people don’t give it a second thought. Out of sight and out of mind, right?
“Living sewer smart” is thinking about your actions when it comes to disposing of cooking fats, oils and grease (FOG). Dumping your FOG down the sink eventually leads to a thick build up in your home’s sewer system, which can clog your sewer pipes. These clogs can lead to sewage backing up inside your home or on your property.
Sewage spills can create a stinky mess in your home and be extremely expensive to clean-up. In some cases, substantial back-ups can lead to sewage draining down the curb and into the stormwater system which can contaminate nearby creeks. In addition, household FOG leads to increased maintenance of the public sewer systems and ultimately higher customer sewer fees.
How can you “live sewer smart”? Instead of draining your FOG into your kitchen sink drain, collect it in a container that can be sealed. Find easy ways to dispose of your sealed FOG container in your area.
Live Sewer Smart Holiday Tips
The holidays are a great times for family get togethers and great cooking. Don’t let a costly and messy sewer back-up ruin your holiday plans. Here are some easy and proactive ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ to practice during this holiday season to prevent a sewer back-up:
DO’s
Scrape greasy pans and dishes, into the trash before washing.
Use sink strainers to catch food items & empty into the trash.
Pour FOG into a sealable container, such as a coffee can. Find out where to dispose of full containers here.
DON’TS
Don’t put FOG down the drain.
Don’t use your garbage disposal to wash fatty/greasy foods away. Food scraps can clog sewer pipes – even after the garbage disposal.
Don’t use grease dissolver additives. They only pass grease down the line and cause problems in other areas.
